So you’ve chosen a wedding photographer. Congratulations! Maybe you met him or her more than once. Maybe your family or friends know him or her, too. Now what? It’s important to continue building a rapport. This comes with more conversations, more chats, more communication. And the best tool of the trade is an engagement or bridal shoot.
Every couple is different, and it’s not easy jumping in front of a photographer and being the focus of attention. No other experience will replace a photo session with your own photographer in advance of the wedding. It’s part practice for the big day, but it’s more an opportunity to create lasting creative memories from the very special time in your life. Engagements can be a whirlwind between the reception venue, the caterer, the florist, the decorations, etc. It’s easy to forget why you’re even getting married.
Think of it simply as an opportunity to meet and have a fun relaxed moment together. The experience will be different than the days just prior to your wedding, or on your wedding day. A session like this could be anywhere — in an urban or suburban setting, park, garden, at home or some other favorite or unusual location. This could be a photo session with just the two of you, or it could include at certain time some of the extended family or friends. If the schedule works out, plan for a stop at a boutique coffee shop and share your favorite coffee, desert and some stories will subconsciously make that connection develop.
This session will be a great time for all to meet and work together, and build the rapport. Everything you do with your photographer allows for you, the bride and groom, to be more comfortable and natural.
Then, turn the images from this session into invitations, a guest book, signature mat or just share them with yourselves on the wall.
And remember, plan well in advance to nail down a day with the perfect weather.
